ERC currently has D-Link multi-gigabit switches of the new standard with speeds from 2.5 Gbps.

Speeds of 1 Gbps have already become commonplace, while the 10 Gbps standard has yet to gain widespread popularity. Probably because implementing these speeds requires laying new cables or reducing the length of existing ones if they are used.

With this in mind, on September 27, 2016, the Ethernet Alliance approved the IEEE 802.3bz specifications, which provide the opportunity to begin the path to widespread adoption of two new standards - 2.5GBASE-T and 5GBASE-T. And as always happens, a lot of time passes from the moment of approval of the standard to the arrival of products on the market. However, their use radically increases the speed of data transmission over existing Ethernet networks!

According to the previous standard 1000BASE-T (IEEE 802.3ab), the maximum theoretical speed limit is 1 Gbps, and according to the new ones - 2.5 Gbps and 5 Gbps, respectively. What is extremely important: this acceleration can also be achieved on the old cable infrastructure, that is, on copper cables of categories 5e and 6 (Cat5e and Cat6) up to 100 m long. Nothing needs to be laid anew! As for specific devices, managed switches have been available for a long time, but unmanaged switches are somewhat new.

But there is a need to take care of network cards. Because if the workstation or desktop computer does not have the same 2.5 Gbps interface, a small upgrade must be made.
